EMERALD CITY BALL - Saturday, July 5 (Fun Updates!)

Tickets are still available for PEERS’ Emerald City Ball and will be sold at the door for $20.00 each. We have a few other fun updates on the ball that we’d like to share with you:

The Emerald City Ball
(sponsored by the Period Events & Entertainments Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, July 5, 2008
Doors Open at 6:45 p.m.
Dance Lesson: 7:00 p.m. (Edwardian and Ragtime Dances)
Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: The Divertimento Dance Orchestra
Tickets at the Door: $20.00
Ball Website: http://peers.org/emerald.html

We're off to see the Wizard at a ball in the glorious capital city of Oz. Come join us in honouring the singular courage of Dorothy Gale and her intrepid companions as they prepare to embark on their dangerous mission to the West.

There is definitely no need to stress about costumes for this ball. You have a huge range of choices: Fantasy costume, period costume (Medieval to Edwardian), or a combination of the two is admired but not required and, of course, green attire and costumes inspired by the Oz universe will be very welcome. While the ball is technically set in 1900, the citizens of Oz wear a variety of costumes ranging from Medieval gowns and tunics all the way up to late Victorian and Edwardian frocks and frock coats. Vintage or modern evening dress is also appropriate since the most unusual visitors do occasionally arrive in the Land of Oz.

Our Emerald City band is the Divertimento Dance Orchestra, a vintage dance band known for their elegance, authenticity and versatility. Dance music for the evening will range from graceful Edwardian ballroom dance music to the Great Wizard’s own favorite Ragtime tunes from his distant native star Omaha, Amerika. Dance waltzes, polkas, schottisches, reels, contradances, mixers and other popular turn of the century dances as well as the newer Ragtime one-step, two-step and tango. The Wizard will provide music for every taste (If you’re familiar with the 1939 film version of “The Wizard of Oz,” you will definitely recognize some of the tunes.).

For those wishing a brush-up in the latest dances, the pre-ball dance class will focus on the “new” dances of the Edwardian and Ragtime age: The lively One-Step, the sinuous One-Step Tango, the beautiful Hesitation Waltz, and the Turning Two-Step, an smooth and fun 1890’s alternative to the Polka.

The ball will also feature our famous No-Host (cash) bar, serving both alcoholic and soft drinks. The Wizard will also provide a complimentary light snack buffet (Your potluck contributions to the buffet are most welcome. The Emerald City is very expensive to maintain!).

For more information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org before Saturday.

Driving Directions:
Take the 3rd Avenue exit off 101, going west into San Mateo. Follow 3rd Avenue across the railroad tracks and turn right on Ellsworth Avenue. The Masonic Lodge - a white three-story Colonial style Edwardian building - is located on the corner of Ellsworth and Tilton.

BAERS Great Regency Shipwreck Ball - June 21, 2008, Kensington, CA

The Bay Area English Regency Dance Society (www.baers.org) Presents:
The Great Regency Shipwreck Ball (or "Regency Survivor")

We can't get off this island, so we might as well entertain ourselves!
Caller Alan Winston (who led the Pride and Prejudice Ball this March and has taught for Friday Night Waltz) with
The Divertimento Dance Orchestra (who'll play at the Emerald City Ball in July)
Saturday June 21, 2008 8:00-11:30pm
Arlington Church (52 Arlington Ave, Kensington, CA)

The Divertimento Orchestra will provide jolly music. The marooned elite, in
any remaining finery, are invited to dance arm-in-arm with the ships'
captain and crew. Meet up at 8PM sharp aboard the ruins for dance, drink
and good company!

There'll be community oriented longways and set dances, and probably more of them
than you'd expect at, say, Gaskell. There'll be Congress of Vienna and some free
waltzes; probably about a dozen. Most of the dance time will be in quick teaching and
extended dancing of country dances. Alan's good at putting these across efficiently.

Come as you are, whether Passenger, Pirate, Native, Merfolk or member of Her
Majesty's Royal Navy. If your wardrobe was relocated to Davy Jones' Locker
during the fateful storm, fashion yourself new togs from local flora (grass
skirts are all the rage among the natives!).

We've made peace with the island inhabitants and the merfolk in the bay, so
we will feast with them on seafood, fresh fruits, springwater and provisions
salvaged from the hold. The contribution of exotic new delicacies from
forays inland are welcome - as long as *you* have already tried them first.

Subscriptions are $20 at the door, $15 in advance.
$2 discount for GBACG, and BACDS members.
Advance mail registrations must be received by us no later than June 18th.
Costumes admired but not required. All dances taught during the ball. No
partner required.

Make out checks to "BAERS", and send them to

its time to share...

CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL - Advance Bargain Ticket Deadline Approaching

Just a reminder that the deadline for ordering advance bargain tickets to the Chicago All-That-Jazz Ball is Saturday, April 26. To order advance tickets at the GBACG rate, please send a check for $10.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. James and I will be CostumeCon this weekend so you can also buy tickets from us there! Tickets, as usual, will be sold at the door for $20.00 each. Here’s our latest ball write-up:

THE CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL
(Sponsored by PEERS – the Period Events & Entertainment Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Vintage Dance Lesson: 7:00- 8:00 pm.
Formal Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Lee Presson and the Nails
Tickets: $15.00 in advance (by April 26); $20.00 at the door
Ball Website: http://peers.org/chicago.html

Rouge your knees, roll your stockings down, start the car, and come join us and host Billy Flynn, Esquire, at the hottest party in Chicago for All That Jazz! PEERS is proud (and truly amazed) to announce that the evening's band will be the one, the only, the incomparable Lee Presson and the Nails.

1920’s or 30’s costume or vintage or modern evening dress (white or black tie optional) is admired, but not required. The year is 1931 but we won't hold you to that.

The music will range from elegant vintage ballroom dance music (waltzes, tangos, fox trots, and even polkas!) to cool blues and hot Swing of the 1920's and early ‘30's – perhaps with a few musical surprises along the way. For guests wishing to brush up on their vintage dance skills, there will be a pre-ball dance lesson in vintage Foxtrot and Swing at 7:00 p.m. with Persephone and Charles. Even if you’re a novice, they’ll soon have you gliding along the floor like young Fred Astaire and swinging like a gate.

Intermission entertainment includes both a half-time floor show and DJ dance music for you insatiable dancers. To fortify us for these vigorous dance sets, a complimentary light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening. (In our current Depression, your potluck contributions are always appreciated!).

Special Announcement from Mr. Lee Presson himself: “The first 100 people who attend the May Chicago Ball will get a free Lee Presson and the Nails CD.”

For information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.

Attn Costumers & Those Who Like to Play Dress Up!

Apologies for cross-posting - I thought this event would be of interest to both costumers & faire folk, so I'm posting it in a few tribes.

Costume Con is an annual event that moves around the country (and sometimes goes international) -- this year we are really lucky that it is coming to San Jose (first time in 14 years it's been in California!). For those who like to make costumes, or like to wear them, this is going to be a great venue to learn about costuming, and even more importantly, to socialize with likeminded people! There will be classes, competitions, and tons of social events (and yes, the hotel has a party floor!).

It takes place April 25-28, 2008, so it's coming up in about a month! The cost goes up incrementally every so often - currently a weekend membership is $95 and will be $110 if you buy at the door - so purchase in advance!

Check out their website for lots of details on classes, competitions, social events, hotel info, etc.: http://www.CC26.info

Here's some more info:

Costume-Con Returns to the Bay Area
Costumers Gather to Ooo, Ahh, and Learn

For the first time in 14 years, Costume-Con returns to California! Costume-Con is a premiere venue for professional and hobbyist costumers to meet, compete, share, and socialize. Costume-Con 26 takes place April 25-28, 2008, the San Jose DoubleTree. Visit http://www.CC26.info for more information.

Costume-Con 26 welcomes space cadets, living history aficionados, reenactors, textile designers, theater designers, fursuiters, mascots, cosplayers, fantasy costumers, costume professionals and folks who just like to dress up! The convention offers fun and education for all types of costumers, and those who appreciate costumes, such as photographers and artists.

Kevin Roche, master class award winning amateur costumer, is the chair for the convention, and will include his work in the retrospective programming. The historical and science-fiction contests are a major draw, for designers and skilled sewers alike. Fashion designers will find the Parallel Dimensions in Design competitions right up their alley. Mad Science Fair competitors create wild props and gadgets. Topics of workshop interest range from stagecraft to historical tribe design. Not to miss out on the lighter side, convention events include a Victorian Underwear Party and a Mouse-Kerade (costumed stuffed animals parade), as well as a special Doll Exhibit, featuring Japanese jointed dolls.

"Costume-Con" is a registered service mark of Karen Dick, used by permission.
"CC26! Adventures in the Costume Continuum" is a project of The Unconventional Foundation

question on pleating

how do you determine how large a pleat should be? Is it just trial and error or is there a better was to determine how much much material you need, or how to get a section of material pleated correctly to have an even pleat in a section?

Evan and Matt gathered a group of piratical celebrities and entertainers to donate their time to entertain, give out toys, and play games with the children and their families in the hospital. The event was so successful, the group decided to launch a similar hospital visit and fund raiser in Northern California under the leadership of Craig Appel, local Bay Area pirate entertainer.

Country dance and waltz with the courtesans of Regency-era London : February 16, 2008, San Mateo, California

THE CYPRIANS' BALL

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2008

at the

SAN MATEO MASONIC LODGE
(San Mateo)
100 N. Ellsworth, at Tilton

Doors open 7:30

The ball starts with "Congress of Vienna" at 8:00
$15 in advance.
$20 at the door

There's a two-dollar GBACG discount (for the GBACG member only) in advance or at the door.

Scandalous early-1800s costume - the era of "Pride and Prejudice" admired
but not required. We cannot, in good conscience, recommend that young ladies
damp their muslins in the Bay Area in February. (Modern festive or formal wear, or
courtesan wear from any era - after all, they were doing Cretan revival in Paris at
this time.)

For more information, call 650/365-2913 or visit
www.baers.org (where you can download a registration form)

Directions: From Highway 101, exit at 3d Avenue. Go west on 3d, turn right
at N. Ellsworth. The temple is at the corner of N. Ellsworth and Tilton.

(Note: "The Cyprian" was a Regency nickname for Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, who
was associated with the island of Cyprus. Cyprians, then, were devotees of
Aphrodite; in other words, courtesans, who held an annual ball to shop for new
"protectors" who could keep them in good style. So there's an extra degree of
flirtatiousness at the Cyprians' Ball.)

All country dances taught and prompted. Fun will be had!

Fabulous Hats! Preservation Action Council San Jose's Vintage Hat fundraiser

Hi all,

Just spreading the word a bit, since this is a smaller event and doesn't get a lot of publicity outside of San Jose. PAC*SJ is a groupd devoted to restoring and preserving historic buildings and landscapes in the South Bay, and this is one of their annual fundraisers. I got to see the hats firsthand during the photo shoot (that's me, in the green feather beret) and there are some truly fabulous ones up for sale this year. I suggest you all go check it out - if not to buy, then at least for inspiration and to support a worthy cause!
Rush Orders--Writing a Contract Part II

Do you even take rush orders?

What kind of clause (if any) do you include in your contract?

Do you charge more for rush orders?

While it would be nice to say no to rush orders, sometimes as a freelancer I have to occasionally take what I can get when I can get it.

What I usually tell clients is that if they want a rush order, that I can't gaurantee that they will be getting EXACTLY what they expect--and I also tell them that I will often be working up until the very last minute, especially since there can be unexpected delays or issues. If this is okay with them, then we proceed, if it isn't, then we don't. Is this what you do too or do you have something else that you tell your clients?

Working without a contract has bitten me in the ass a few too many times.

I make custom costumes, mostly for bellydancers.

What are some good resources for writing contracts for custom sewing?

What are the obvious and not so obvious things that a contract should state?

Much obliged,

Looking for someone to design a sexy sheep costume

Hi all,

We are looking for a costume designer for the short film "The Sheep and The Ranch Hand; a SexyQueer Love Story." The main design/creation effort will be for the sexy sheep costume, but there will be a couple of other costumes as well which can be put together using purchased articles of clothing.

In addition to your design work, you would also be the Costume Supervisor on the actual shoot.

This would be a great gig for a student or someone starting out in their career who is looking for film credits. You get: credit, exposure, connections, DVD, good food, good folks, good film for your reel. I am a very aggressive marketer so this film will get a lot of exposure.

There will be three shoot days, probably on a weekend. Shooting will take place in the latter part of January/early February.

Following is a description of the film:

Welcome to a sexy, comedic love story of a woman discovering the joys of imagining that she is a Sheep. In being her bestial self, she experiences a freedom that is both unexpected and profoundly empowering. While at times tongue-in-cheek, this film also has an underlying serious theme of personal freedom.

In animalistic pleasures both simple (eating delicious clover) and sublimely erotic (having her fleece combed and de-burred, and more), she revels in adventures with her adoring lover, the Ranch Hand. Her journey takes her from loneliness to liberation through connecting with her internal truth. The script is funny, sexy, and real, and has received very positive feedback.

Please see our website at

sheeplovestory.webs.com

Thanks!

GBACG Gilded Age Tea - 2/9 - tickets on sale now!

Calling all Edwardians --- from actresses and bon vivants to pillars of society. The Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild requests the pleasure of your company as we enjoy our first event of 2008, the Gilded Age Tea. This sumptuous afternoon of pleasure will be held in the The Garden Court of San Francisco's first grand hotel, The Palace.

The Palace has welcomed kings and queens, industrialists and dignitaries, presidents and prime ministers. It is, in every way, an ideal setting for The Gilded Tea. Our tea celebrates the debonair and graceful fin de siecle world immortalized by writer Edith Wharton, painter John Singer Sargent, and beauty Camille Clifford inspiring the drawings of Charles Dana Gibson.

We will convene for an exquisitely elegant afternoon of high tea and gracious company in a Belle Epoque setting among marble pillars, potted palms and a string quartet playing for our pleasure.

Tickets are $48 for GBACG Members, $58 for Non-Members, and $40 for Children.

Tatterdemalion Vintage Tails Coat - More Tattered the Better!

For an absinthe theme New Years party and the Edwardian Ball, I'm looking for a very tired and old vintage tails coat or morning jacket. Black or darker tones are best and sizes between 38 and 40 are preferred, though a little smaller may do (those old folk were tiny you know!).

I WANT it to be very tattered and/or threadbare, even a bit dirty. Think early Chaplin or any number of long lost absinthe poets and bedraggled bohemians from Paris circa 1890-1910, slumped over in a filthy tavern corner and spotty with spilled spirits.

However, the coat must be mostly intact and wearable. I'm not interested in something so brittle and ancient that it'll fall apart.

Please do check those dusty old great grandparents' closets and grandiose wardrobes for something now far too worse for wear but befitting a special costume for my green fairy dreams.

Click my face and send a message with any leads. Thanks!

Erotic sheep film - need costumer - baaa!

Hi everyone,

I'm making a short film (5-6 minutes), and will need a costumer. Specifically, I'll need a sheep costume, as well as a ranch hand costume. The sheep costume will need to be crafted, and the ranch hand costume will either be provided by actor, or can be purchase in thrift stores. I thought this would be a good place to post to see if anyone here might be interested in joining in on a fun project with fun people.

The story is of a woman discovering the erotic joys of imagining that she is a Sheep, having adventures with her loving Ranch Hand. It's an all female cast. I've received excellent feedback on the script. Auditions will be in a week or so, and shooting will happen late this month or early next month. No pay but credit, DVD, good food, good folks, lots o' fun, and a well-run shoot.

About me: I’m a queer female video producer with corporate/industrial experience, who wants to just do something fun and creative for the heck of it. I'll be submitting this short to festivals and perhaps some online venues.

If interested, PM me telling me about your interest in the project, and I can tell you more...

The Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild presents:

VICTORIAN CEMETERY STROLL
Saturday, October 13th, 2007 -- 12:30pm to 4:30pm
Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, CA
http://gbacg.org/Current/CemeteryStroll.htm

Please join GBACG for a peaceful Autumn stroll through a beautiful, picturesque Victorian cemetery. Mountain View Cemetery, nestled in the hills of Oakland, California, is a San Francisco Bay Area gem. This cemetery is considered to be one of the most prominent examples of the Victorian “garden style” cemeteries in America. The design was created in 1863 by Frederick Law Olmstead, landscape architect famous for designing Central Park in New York City, and the grounds of the Capitol in Washington DC. His design for Mountain View Cemetery incorporates the surrounding natural world and features terraced hills, breathtaking vista views, and extraordinary monuments.

Our walk will feature several stops along the way, designed especially to enhance the visit and give us a chance to enjoy the areas features and history. The stroll will last about one hour, afterwards we’ll retire to a special spot for a late afternoon lunch, so be sure to pack yourself a picnic.

ADVANCE TICKETS REQUIRED. Ticket deadline is 10/9.

THE GATSBY SUMMER AFTERNOON
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 -- 1:00pm to 6:00pm
Dunsmuir House & Gardens, Oakland, CA

The biggest and best costume party of the year takes place at Dunsmuir Historic House in Oakland. It’s The Gatsby Summer Afternoon presented by the Art Deco Society of California.

This year GBACG is going to Gatsby and we hope to have the pleasure of your company. Known simply as The Gatsby, this event allows attendees to step back in time, circa 1925, as the party fills the great lawns in front of Dunsmuir House. The air is sweetened by the sounds of music from the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra playing popular favorites of the 1920s and 1930s. Antique cars offer a chauffeur service from the main gate to the picnic area. You’ll have a short walk to find our picnic location.

Costume Designer needed for emerging theatre company

Butterfield 8 Theatre Company is looking for a Costume Designer.

Butterfield 8 is a small but emerging company based in the East Bay. Following the vision of Artistic Director John Butterfield, the company is dedicated to bringing fresh approaches to classic and historical works, as well as showcasing new and experimental plays and ideas.

We are currently going into production for

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This production will feature some non-traditional casting, with a strong possibility of same-sex couples in the leading roles, and supporting roles filled by either sex, all ages, and many “body-types.” We hope to emphasize movement with both staging and costuming, and may double-cast several roles.

The show will be in production through August and September,
and run weekends in October at Cue Productions in Concord.

It was on sale at Poppy's but no indicator as to what it was made of...it has chenille stripes along side what i think is bicolored draped/cinched cotton. I washed it very carefully and it dried nicely as well and now have a yard of 56" wide mystery fabric with too much give for a corset (would've looked nice too). Now I am at a loss for what to do with it...anyone got an idea, other than forking it over to someone else? Oh the colors are a tawny brown chenille and a mix of brown and robin's egg blue - so pretty.

Looking for a grommet setter renal in SF or South Bay

Please pardon the cross-post.

Does anyone know of a place that rents their grommet setter in SF or the South Bay at large? I've mislaid mine and have a project due right away. Laci's is out of reach for me due to their limited hours and my schedule. It would be very helpful to find someone who - like Laci's - will also sell 00 grommets as mine are probably with my setter!

“The Smiling Man” World Premiere and DVD Release Party

(San Francisco, CA) - Local movie makers Kelp Entertainment are proud to unveil their new detective mystery in a free Noir-themed bash and public screening at 12 Galaxies on the evening of August 7th, 8:00 P.M.

Set in San Francisco, 1948, “The Smiling Man” tells the story of down-on-his-luck private detective Nick Chambers as he tracks down a missing man with only a single lead to work from - a photograph of his grinning quarry. Without even a name to go on, Nick begins a citywide hunt for this mysterious missing person, but finds more questions than answers. Based on the short story written by Keoni Chavez, originally published in the anthology “Fog City Nocturne”, The Smiling Man pays loving homage to the classic detective films of the forties, while adding a decidedly post-modern slant.

The centerpiece of the evening will be two screenings of “The Smiling Man”, each lasting 37 minutes, once in vintage black and white, and again in color. Many members of the cast and crew will be on hand to share anecdotes and answer questions.

Guests can compete in a “Liar’s Dice” tournament for valuable prizes. Refreshments will be available for purchase at 12 Galaxies’ bar, and we may have a surprise musical guest!

1940’s clothing is encouraged, but by no means required.

“The Smiling Man” World Premiere and DVD Release Party

RE-FASHION Costume Change and Exchange Recycling Event

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2007
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Humanist Hall, Oakland
390 27th St, between Telegraph and Broadway

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

or if you just need more information…

please email refashion2007@gmail.com

GBACG Victorian Bodice Draping Workshop in Berkeley, CA--tix now on sale!

If you missed the first GBACG "Basic Bodice Draping for the Victorian Era" workshop in early February, here’s one more chance to learn how to create Victorian bodices that fit YOU like a glove! GBACG President Kendra Van Cleave will demonstrate how to drape a fitted bodice and then students will pair up and drape each other. We’ll then go through all of the patterning and mockup stages so that each student leaves with a perfectly fitted bodice pattern sloper that can be adjusted to suit most eras of the Victorian era (1830-1900).

Students must wear their Victorian corsets (and the appropriate undergarments) during the draping and fitting stages of the class if they intend to wear their bodice over a corset. A kit containing muslin and pattern paper will be provided to each student. The course fee includes the kit. A basic supply list will be sent to each student after the sign-up deadline.

Date: April 29th, 10-5 p.m.
Cost: $25.00 GBACG Members, $30.00 Non-Members
Deadline for Sign-up: April 21st, 2007. Space is limited to 12.

Location: LSI, 2015 Center Street, Berkeley, Ca. 1 Block south of Berkeley BART. LSI has drink machines but no food, bring a sack lunch or visit one of the local eateries. Free street parking or paid parking garage near by.

Please go to our website (www.gbacg.org) for sign-up information.

Photos from "The Smiling Man" shoot!

I'm sorry that this is so late, but the last two weeks have been so full of hell that you don't even want to know about it. I'm just glad I'm finally able to put my attention back on the film and offer some long overdue kudos for the troupe of extras that joined us for the shoot on February 17th!

We all met by the fountain in Justin Herman Plaza. Assistant Director Bryan Tolin, Our star, Chris Hudak and I were there fairly early, and were terrified that no one was actually going to show.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras00.jpg

First to arrive and alleviate our fears was Fedora Lounger Jason "Hondo" Thompson, adding some military gravitas to the scene. Next to show up were Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild member Suzette Davidson and her friend Sanaz Tofighrad, looking quite spectacular in their 40's finery.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras02.jpg

Here's another GBACG representative, Suzanne Long, sporting the most elaborately beautiful hairdo we've seen yet!
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras03.jpg

Representing the Mystery Writers of America, Catherine and Michael Accardi fill out their release forms.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras04.jpg

The group was rounded out by Bud Hazelkorn (left, in the blue suit) and the lovely Agrella family (mostly hidden in the back).
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras05.jpg

Our motley crew of anachronistic extras were quite the spectacle as we took over one of SF Muni's historic F-Line streetcars. Karen Tolin rides in the back getting some "making of" footage.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras06.jpg

The shot of everyone exiting the streetcar was nearly lost when the doors broke as we reached the Castro station. Luckily, the driver fixed the doors quickly, and was kind enough to let us all get back on the street car and exit again, resulting in a perfect shot. Here Deborah Agrella comforts her son Daniel as we all wait on the platform as the driver worked on the doors.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras07.jpg

Bill Longen, Events Producer for the The Castro Theater, was very generous in allowing us to shoot in their ticket booth, even though we arrived a half-hour late.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras08.jpg

We rounded out the day with my Hitchcockian cameo as a beat cop giving a thuggish Bud Hazelkorn a hard time.
http://www.thesmilingman.com/MakingOf/Extras09.jpg

Our most sincere thanks go out to the eleven fine folks who went out of their way to add a level of richness and authenticity to "The Smiling Man" beyond my wildest hopes.

You are officially invited to a Little Women Costume Salon!
The date is Sunday, March 4th, 2007.
Time is 2-6pm.
Place is Shelley's house in Walnut Creek (20 min walk from Pleasant Hill BART)

Costume Salons, presented by the GBACG, are mellow, informal opportunities to talk costume. You can come to get more information about mid-nineteenth century costuming (prepping for May's GBACG Little Women event), to get fitting help on any project, or to just hang out and be social with other costumers.

There is a sewing room for those who want to get work done, we'll be showing the movie in another room, there will be experienced mid-19th century costumers and costume books present to answer questions, and the rest is a party!

Details: Tea and coffee will be provided and the rest is potluck. Teens and older please. This home has cats. Skipping perfume/cologne would be appreciated by the allergic.

Please RSVP to Shelley Rodgers: pirate@value.net
or to Lisa Swehla: 510.237.1508
and we'll give you the rest of the details.
Hope to see you there!

Surcoat Pattern?

Are there any surcoat patterns that people on this tribe recommend? My original faire outfit was going ot have a lace up bodice but I am now a nursing mom and think a surcoat may be more practical for me.

I have searched the pattern review but am looking for additional recommendations.

Thanks!

Film Noir Casting Call

Do you love Film Noir?
How would you like to be in one?

This is your chance!

Kelp Entertainment is currently shooting “The Smiling Man”, an original one hour long detective story set in San Francisco, shortly after the end of WWII.

We need people of any age, race or sex as secondary characters and extras to fill out the backgrounds of a few key scenes shot around the city. We will mostly be shooting on weekends in January. This is a great chance to get some exposure, dress up in your vintage finest clothes and have some fun!

The catch:
· All applicants must be able to provide their own reasonably authentic period clothing.

· Women must be able to do their own hair and makeup.

· Men must have appropriately short hair, and be willing to slick it back with pomade (available on request) or equivalent.

No one who can meet those requirements will be refused, regardless of background, experience or talent. (Applicants will be required to submit a photo of themselves in their vintage costume for approval.)

We are a tiny, independent company, funding our production out-of-pocket. The only compensation we can offer is screen credit and a copy of the finished DVD, which should be available in spring of 2007.

For more information please call Bryan Tolin at (707) 246-9969
or send an email to piratebryan@msn.com

Queen Elizabeth and the Pirate

Saturday, February 24, 2007

Join Queen Elizabeth and her court as she hosts a farewell banquet for the infamous female Irish Pirate, Grace O'Malley, at a Greenwich tavern called The Bearded Mermaid. There will a fabulous feast, entertainments, music, and much toasting and intrigues throughout the evening. Will the Queen pardon Grace's past indiscretions against the crown? Will Grace's nemesis, Sir Richard Bingham, get his comeuppance? Our location is the Sequoia Lodge in the Oakland Hills, the same location as last year's magical Lord of the Rings event. Tickets will go on sale late December and more details are to come. You won't want to miss this one!

Tickets will go on sale soon -- I'll update here as soon as they are available. Advance tickets required.

New Year's Eve "Camelot" Waltz Ball

nce again, we are having a formal "New Year's Eve Waltz Ball" at the International House 2299 Piedmont Berkeley December 31, 2006.

The theme this year is the "Camelot" Waltz.

Also again, we are pleased to have the Brassworks band, one of the nation's best Vintage Dance Bands to play waltzes, polkas, and some tangos, latin and swing music from 9pm to 12:30 am.

The Chevron Auditorium at the International House is a national historic landmark, built in 1927 and fully refurbished in the 1980's, with a 3,500 square foot hardwood floor and a beautiful social room. We will have a midnight Martinalli's toast and singalong as in years past.

This is a fun friendly cheerful way to pass the New Year's Eve dancing in a beautiful hall to great music. And many people dressed formally. Your are welcome to dress comfortably too, if you want.

Last year we saw about 250 dancing the night away. Great fun for all.

NO partner required or expected. Many people arrive by themselves or with friends, and find dance partners.

We will have light refreshments, including vegetable, fruit, cheese, and cold cut platters.

There is a 3 hour crash course in Waltz, Polka, and Congress of Vienna from 7 to 10 pm on Tuesday December 26th at the
