question on pleating

how do you determine how large a pleat should be? Is it just trial and error or is there a better was to determine how much much material you need, or how to get a section of material pleated correctly to have an even pleat in a section?

Generally, it is kind of trial and error, but I have a pleating foot on my sewing machine(awesome), so I do a test strip and measure before and after to determine the overall shortening....half, third, quarter? Pleating foots rule, unless you want really super deep pleats or boxpleats, of course. I have no idea if that just helped you or not. hee hee.... meowwww

Sometimes I'll draw the style lines on the first draft of my pattern ...the spacing of the pleats... then figure out the amount I need to add, cut out & expand the pattern ... other times, I drape directly with muslin, then even things out while creating the pattern..
